Carmarthenshire Dormice - April 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Dormouse NestboxOn Sunday 21st March volunteers helped out with the annual clean out of the dormouse boxes at Rhos Cefn Bryn Wildlife Trust reserve, Llanon as well as the installation of 36 new boxes. Six boxes were traditional wooden boxes and 30 of a more innovative design made out of 110 mm plastic drain pipe. These were funded by CCW through the Carmarthenshire LBAP Partnership and are to be trialled at the reserve and monitored to see if they will be used by dormice. Some of the old boxes were damp and becoming uninhabitable. Jacqueline Hartley undertakes regular monitoring of the boxes here and people are welcome to with her and the other vols on the monitoring days.  These will take place on the following Saturdays: 17 April, 22 May, 19 June, 24 July, 21 August, 25 September, 16 October. The site is also part of the National Dormouse Monitoring programme.
