This survey organised by University of Aberystwyth aims to find out more about the foraging habits of bumble bee species in the UK. Much research has been done into how bees search for nectar and pollen, and this survey is part of a wider project looking at how bumble bees and other pollinators use colour to find their food. Observations are requested on which types of flower are most often visited by bumble bees. The University are also interested to know whether individual bumble bees always search for nectar and pollen on one or two flower types, or whether they sometimes visit a much wider range of flowers on one foraging trip. The idea is for people to watch bumble bees in their gardens, or in nearby fields, and to record what flowers they visit by following them. The survey has been designed to be used without prior knowledge of bumble bee identification and you can provide as many records as you like, or have time, to fill in – any information is greatly received.
