If you are likely to drive at least 20 miles on a single carriageway road somewhere in the UK this summer then the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) needs your help. Their Mammals on Roads survey has been recording mammals seen dead or alive on British roads for 7 years, tracking changes in the size and distribution of wild mammal populations. This work has helped show that hedgehogs have declined over the UK by a quarter since 2001 and in some areas by as much as half. Counting road casualties and sightings helpstells us more about mammal population numbers in the wider landscapes. Volunteers are requested to look out for mammals, dead and alive before end of September and to record their sightings on a survey form. These can be downloaded from the PTES website at www.ptes.orgor phone 0207498 4533. |
