More Information of the use of habitats by DormiceA Dormouse using Molinia to hibernate in was found in the Llannon area over the winter. The nest was in a tussock just to one side of the centre of the tussock. The nest was found a little way, I’ve estimated maybe as much as 10m away from the nearest hedge. Rhos Cefn BrynPaul and I will continue to monitor the Dormice at Rhos Cefn Bryn for the mean time. The first three dates for monitoring at Rhos Cefn Bryn are: Sat 16 April, Sat 21 May, Sat 18 June We’ll still meet at 8.30 am by the silage bales at the top of the lane which leads to the site. It is still open for anyone to come along who would like to. Just let me know if you plan to come along as parking is restricted and under the terms of my licence numbers should be limited. National Botanic GardensRhian Lewis will continue (hopefully!) to check the boxes at the gardens. The Gardens has made a bunch of new boxes so with a bit of luck they will be erected this year and the Dormice will decide to use them! LLyn Lech OwainThis site has a small number of boxes up and I’m hopeful they will get a chance to monitor them this year. BryndiasWe have a new site which we set up in March with 50 boxes at a private site. Richard Pond will be monitoring at this site. We have found dormouse opened nuts at a couple of locations at the site so we know they are there. The habitat looks perfect; I’ll take some photos to put in the next newsletter so fingers crossed. It will be very interesting to see if the Dormice use the boxes; my experience so far is when the habitat is that good they stick two fingers up at the boxes!
Website/Blog/Facebook/ForumI’m trying to figure out a way to connect everybody in Carmarthenshire, and anybody outside who would like to, with an interest in Dormice or would like to know more about them so that information, like the Dormouse hibernating in Molinia, or the chance for people to ask questions about can easily take place. Isabel Macho is going to put this on the Carmarthenshire Biodiversity website as a starter, but my view on websites is that you can’t post things on them. So any views or ideas would be gratefully received. |
