There are probably over a thousand species of fungi in Carmarthenshire – more than all the variety of trees, wildflowers and grasses in the county. They are incredibly interesting organisms, with some spectacular shapes, forms and smells. Carmarthenshire has a growing number of enthusiasts keen to find out more about this rich variety of fungi that we have in the county. Regular events are already organised by groups such as the Wildlife Trust, Llanelli Naturalists and at the National Botanic Gardens but there is no formal group to focus survey effort/training or raising awareness. Using funding from CCW the Carmarthenshire Biodiversity Partnership is hoping to establish a Carmarthenshire Fungus Recording Network based at the Botanic Gardens. Web pages for this Network are being established on the Carmarthenshire Biodiversity website (www.carmarthenshirebiodiversity.co.uk). Here you will be able to find out more about Carmarthenshire’s fungi, see where to look for them, find out about events, training and fungi forays, make enquiries about fungi you have found and use links to find out more about British fungi.
Keep an eye out on the website for the Network’s pages!
