Amphibians and reptiles – a new group for Carmarthenshire PDF Print E-mail

Adder © WGARGHerpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) are a consistently overlooked group of animals with populations under ever increasing pressure due to habitat loss, introduced fungal pathogens and human encroachment. The West Glamorgan Amphibian and Reptile Group was recently formed to raise awareness regarding herpetofauna, monitor populations and actively conserve and create suitable habitat. This group is now expanding east into Bridgend and west into Carmarthenshire and aims to recruit more volunteers to help out with surveys and practical work such as pond creation.

The Group is working closely with the Herpetological Conservation Trust, and have already undertaken pond and habitat creation at two sites in the Neath Port Talbot area. Funding has been secured from the Countryside Council of Wales and Keep Wales Tidy to drive the projects forward.

Common Lizzard © WGARGReptiles are protected by law and may be found on a range of habitats, in both rural and urban environments. Grasslands, woodland edges, brownfield sites, heaths, wetlands and freshwater habitats are all used.  Much of their habitat has been lost to development and agricultural improvement or fragmented.

In Carmarthenshire the common toad, adder, grass snake, common lizard and slow worm are all priority LBAP species and action plan will be written for this group as the Biodiversity Action Plan is revised. Targets to raise information about amphibians and reptiles and their habitat requirements will be included and well as targets to undertake surveys of suitable sites and to undertake practical management such as pond creation. Guidance will be produced to go into planning application packs to raise awareness of the potential presence of reptiles and amphibians on their application site.

The group is looking forward to undertaking similar pr ojects in Carmarthenshire.  The group welcomes new members whether experienced or just interested to join us in actively conserving our amphibians and reptiles and their habitat.  Visit their website at: www.wgarg.co.uk
