Marsh FritillaryThe ranger at Llyn Llech Owain County Park was amazed to discover not one, not ten but over 100 marsh fritillary butterflies in within a grassland area of the country park. A recent single record in an area of cleared conifer woodland - after an absence of many years - gave no warning to what was to be discovered. It is thought that the felled woodland provided a vital flightway for the butterflies who rely on damp grassland for their survival. Loss and fragmentation of habitats is a major cause of the decline of this species and so this discovery is very important.
