Wildlife and place names PDF Print E-mail

Biodiversity has influenced us in many ways including a strong association with the culture and history of Carmarthenshire. Take a look at just a few examples of the animals and plants that have influenced our place names. Some are still common, some now rare and the wolf and wild boar long gone from our countryside. Many of the once common species that influenced the naming of houses and farms are now declining – what will we call our houses and street names in 100 years time!? A map of the county highlighting some of these names will be put up around the county and it is hoped that people will write in to let us know of any wildlife place names that they know about!
