Although bats are protected, it is permissible to take an injured bat and look after it providing you are intending to release it as soon as it is fit to be released. It is important if you come across a grounded bat then that you not only take some steps to get the bat to safety, away from danger such as predators, but also to protect yourself. Evidence of exposure to a strain of rabies virus has been found in just a very few bats and whilst the risk of rabies is very small indeed, you must take care not to be bitten so wear protective gloves and handle the bat as little as possible. You must get the bat seen by a vet or someone experienced in bat care. BCT runs a 24 hour helpline service 0845 1300 228 where you can get advice. |
