There are probably over a thousand species of fungi in Carmarthenshire. An amazing number – more than all the variety of trees, wildflowers and grasses in the county for instance.
So how do you go about finding out what these fungi are called and where you can find them? There’s no simple answer.
Fungi can be really hard to identify, their fruiting bodies may only last a few hours or they may not even fruit for years.
But they are incredibly interesting organisms, with some spectacular shapes, forms and smells.
And there are some great places to see them in the county.
Carmarthenshire has a growing community of people who know quite a bit about fungi or have recently become interested and want to know more.
Carmarthenshire Fungus Group has been formed to reflect this.
